The gelding is the ultimate companion animal to other alpacas. Alpacas are herd animals and must have companionship to remain healthy. Geldings can be housed with other geldings, young weanlings, herdsires and females. Geldings as companions to herdsires Geldings as companions to females Geldings as companions to weanlings |

|
Note: Anytime two animals are put together, farmers should monitor
their interaction to ensure there isn't any significant conflict that
could risk the health and well being of their animals.
|
|
Note: It is extremely important that the farmer monitor this situation. Some
geldings, although they don't have the ability to reproduce, will try to breed
a female. Repeated attempts at trying to breed an open or bred female
could cause injury. Only use geldings that show no desire to breed
females in this companion situation.

Note: Again, is is essential that the first time a gelding is put in
with a weanling, their interaction is monitored. Remember, no matter how
nice a gelding is, they are still animals and it is essential that the
farmer always monitor new interactions just to make sure everyone is getting
along together. Most times there won't be any issues at all, but like the
saying goes, 'it is better to be safe than sorry'.
