Using Alpaca Geldings as Farm Companions

The gelding is the ultimate companion animal to other alpacas. Alpacas are herd animals and must have companionship to remain healthy. Geldings can be housed with other geldings, young weanlings, herdsires and females.

Geldings as companions to herdsires

Geldings are the ideal companion for many herdsires. Although many herdsires can live peacefully with other full males, or live peacefully along a common fence line, some simply can not live with, or close to, another herdsires without having physical confrontations. No one wants to see a prized herdsire injured by another one of their valuable breeding males. To avoid this and still give the herdsire the companionship they need, many farms house a herdsire with a gelding. In this way there should not be any physical conflicts and the alpacas will still have the companionship them need.

Note: Anytime two animals are put together, farmers should monitor their interaction to ensure there isn't any significant conflict that could risk the health and well being of their animals.

Some smaller farms may find themselves with only one breeding female, and a gelding can be an excellent companion for their valuable breeding stock. Every effort should be made to ensure that if a farm has one female, they also have a second female. However, illness, death, or even sending one female to another farm for breeding could result in only having one female at the farm for a significant period of time. When that happens, a gelding may do a great job filling in as a companion.

Note: It is extremely important that the farmer monitor this situation. Some geldings, although they don't have the ability to reproduce, will try to breed a female. Repeated attempts at trying to breed an open or bred female could cause injury. Only use geldings that show no desire to breed females in this companion situation.

At some point, all cria must be weaned. Often a gelding can be the perfect uncle for a young weanling that is away from his or her mother for the first time.

Note: Again, is is essential that the first time a gelding is put in with a weanling, their interaction is monitored. Remember, no matter how nice a gelding is, they are still animals and it is essential that the farmer always monitor new interactions just to make sure everyone is getting along together. Most times there won't be any issues at all, but like the saying goes, 'it is better to be safe than sorry'.
